The paragraphs below are taken from the first Upjohn Company
Personnel Manual, issued in 1946 by CEO Donald
Gilmore. You'll notice it says that married men supporting
families and women with no other means of support will have
preference in hiring. Today we would consider that to be
outrageous discrimination. Utterly unacceptable!!!!
Well people, times were very different
Caring companies like Upjohn wanted to make sure that
everyone in their community could have a roof over their
head and food on the table. The two highest-risk groups were
kids and single women so the company priorized these as
stated below. Today, the government and charities have taken
over the job of making sure everyone can have a bed and
food.
