The year 1959 was a very good one for Upjohn. The Portage
manufacturing site had been in use for 8 years and was
running at full efficiency. Sales of steroids, antibiotics
and vitamins were driving record sales and profits each
year. The old favorites like Kaopectate, Citrocarbonate and
Cheracol were still strong sellers.
Capital improvements of $13M and research investment of $15M
were being made.
