When the construction of the Portage site was finished in 1951 it was far out in the country. There were no stores or shops in Portage (I know, hard to believe!) The Upjohn Company thus provided some essential functions for their employees. Even into the 1980's there were barber shops, a pharmacy and a check cashing service. Here are a few photos of the Building 41 barbers shop. I believe there was one in Building 88 also. In the 1980's I remember seeing 3 barbers in action at the same time in Building 41.
