The information here was provide by Michael Beltz. I can
remember being part of a video production in Building 189 during
the 2010s.
This building, at the corner of Portage Rd and
Lansing Rd, was built in the 1950s as a medical clinic for two
brothers who were doctors,Tom and Vic Berglund. It became the first Portage
Medical Clinic, which later relocated to Centre and
Currier Drive.
The Upjohn Company acquired the building
in 1969, numbered it Building 189, and initially used it as offices for the Medical
Sciences Liaison group.
In the 1980s, a large, architecturally unattractive
but functional, studio was added on the north-end and Upjohn Unit
9817, the “Photo Lab”, moved in. They did photography, motion pictures, film processing and photo
printing. Video production was added to the mix in the
mid-1980s.
In 1995, Upjohn merged with Pharmacia,
then Pharmacia & Upjohn became Pharmacia, and in 1999 - along
with any other non-pharmaceutical manufacturing operations -
Unit 9817 was shut down. In May of that year, ImageStream bought
the building and began a video production company that lasted
until 2024.
The list of unit personnel below is from a
1994 Upjohn Phone Book.
