As a
professional starting in 1980 I remember the Upjohn salary
system was based on "Hay Points" and my first job had 254
Hay Points. Since my Upjohn
wage was double what I had been earning in one of the
Kalamazoo paper mills I was a very happy employee. Back then
we had automatic raises tied to inflation so only a month
after I started I got a 5% raise. In 1991 the system changed
to all grades and the tie to the inflation rate had been
