The First Upjohn Employee Handbook

This is the first Employee Handbook, published in September 1944. Looking at everything the company offered to employees at that time, it seems very progressive. Page 10 contains what is now unacceptable - preference in hiring was given to married men with families and to women with no other means of support. In an era when there were few government programs to support unemployed people, companies like Upjohn tried to ensure that the most vulnerable groups of people in their communities, children and single, jobless women, were helped out.
