CEOs were respected and well-loved by the employees and the
Kalamazoo community. Ted Cooper was the first CEO who was
not part of the extended Upjohn family. He joined the
company in 1980 and was promoted to CEO in 1987. The latter
date was in a very difficult period where too few products
were in the research pipeline. He was forced to make
difficult decisions, including the first layoff program in
the history of the company. However, he was still respected
by all. We were all saddened by his cancer and death in
