Sometime in the second half of the 1980s, a series of banners
titled Quality and The Upjohn Company appeared. They were quite
large, being 3 feet wide and 7 feet high. I remember seeing them hanging from the ceiling of the main aisle in Building
41. There were different colored banners with different quality
messages on them. Bruce Peel created the design and messages,
then worked with the Kalamazoo Banner Works to make them. These
banners hung in
other company buildings in Kalamazoo and Portage, perhaps other
locations too. It's likely that when Upjohn merged with
Pharmacia they came down quickly.
Sometime around 2010, I
answered an ad selling these banners. I think it was Jeff
Weisman. He had been contracted by Upjohn to remove and dispose
of all the quality banners. He did not throw them in the trash
but kept them in a lockup at the old fuel oil distributor
building opposite the paper mill on Patterson St. I bought a
dozen and gave half of them away to other ex-Upjohn folks. Mary
Aldrich recently gave me one. Here are the banners I currently
have. I always keep one displayed to remind me of the important
of quality!
