This is a hobby website. It's not
a business. I'm not selling anything. I don't have to
actively market it to survive.
-
The cost to run this site is
minimal, less than $200 a year. There's no big financial
driver for actively marketing it.
-
Having said the above, I do some
inexpensive marketing.
-
Most of The Upjohn Company was
located in the cities of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Portage,
Michigan. Many families in those communities had at least
one relative who worked at Upjohn, often more than one. This
is my primary group of visitors.
-
However, Upjohn had a significant
international prescence across the world so there still is
some interest in other countries about the company. Also,
there are people who research The Upjohn Company for
projects, books and papers. And of course, there are the
curious.
-
Since the company has now been
gone for 30 years my visitors will mostly be older people
who remember the name, often because when they were children
their parents gave them Upjohn products and/or worked at
Upjohn.
-
Print ads are usually expensive.
For example, the best local magazine here wants $250 an ad. I
focus my marketing efforts online in places like Facebook
and Craigslist. I have no worries about Google ranking.
Anyone searching Upjohn Memories in Google will see this
site at the top of the list.
-
For Facebook, there is a
well-established Upjohn Company group so I post in there
regularly. I also post in some of the pharmacy and
pharmaceutical history groups. I post in the Kalamazoo
history groups. I always include a link to the website. This
is all free.
-
In local Craigslist sites, I
posted in the General News section "Do you want to learn about
The Upjohn Company? Click on this link to explore a website
about it". It's free.
-
I'm currently looking into
other possibilities, too. My goal is to do at least one
marketing activity a month.
